This month, with the sad passing of David Slater, we lost a great friend and one of the country’s most selfless motorsport contributors.
David first made a name for himself as a talented driver, competing and winning several races and classes; however, it is perhaps in his work off the track – filling many roles as a volunteer and administrator – where his legacy lies.
The news has stunned many of us in the motorsport community and MSNZ extends its deepest sympathies to David’s wife Ziggy, son Ricky and the entire family.
Such was David’s standing in the race community that as the 2013 race season launched at Pukekohe this month, round winner Jason Bargwanna dedicated his victory to him.
In other race news, Angus Fogg clinched the opening round of the Toyota Finance 86 Championship at Highlands Motorsport Park, which also hosted the final round of what has been a closely fought South Island Endurance Series. Congratulations to the 3-hour and 1-hour series winners Paul Kelly and Grant Williams.
The 2013/2014 Hill Climb Championship also got under way this month in Hawke’s Bay, where Graham Featherstone was all class, claiming both the gravel and tarmac events.
As always, it’s the hard work and dedication of volunteers that make these events possible. The volunteers commission is still putting the good oil finding easier ways to share material and attract and retain more people in our sport. If you’d like to be involved, please contact Nigel Smith.
On 1 November, a draft rewrite of MSNZ’s Constitution, reflecting discussion relating to the organisational review at Conference in May was circulated to all Member Clubs, along with a draft Strategic Plan to 2020. Comment and submissions on the documents are to be sent to the Review Panel by Friday, 31 January 2014. Given we are moving quickly towards the holiday season, consideration should be given to getting your feedback in this side of Christmas.
