I’m pleased to announce that another class of up-and-coming motorsport stars has successfully graduated from the Elite MotorSport Academy. Opotiki rally star Michael Young emerged as the most promising graduate, winning the Ian Snellgrove Trophy – well done Michael!
Michael gets back to business on 14 August at the Malaysian Rally; Round 4 of this year’s Asia Pacific Rally Championship. Michael and his co-driver Malcom Read – who also attended this year’s academy – are currently fourth overall in the championship. It’s their first year competing for the outright title after dominating the 2WD class for the last two years and I wish them the best of luck.
It’s also incredibly encouraging that 15 of the graduates who have passed through the academy’s doors since it began in 2004 now hold professional contracts.
One of those is Hayden Paddon, who continues to impress on rallying’s biggest stage. He finished fourth at Rally Poland to back up his podium in Italy – I’m sure that, like me, you are all enjoying seeing Hayden continue his journey towards the top of the sport.
On the domestic scene, Ben Hunt is closing in on his first-ever NZRC title. However, it’s far from a done deal and the next round in Coromandel is sure to be a cracker!
As we warm up for the summer racing season, the North Island Endurance Series is coming to a close. No doubt the competition will be fierce at the final round, with spots up for grabs in 2016’s National Endurance Series.
Add to that the announcement of the new Premier Racing Calendar, and there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the future of our sport. I’d like to acknowledge everyone whose hard work made this calendar a reality – thanks team!
