It’s with immense pride that we congratulate Scott Dixon for winning the Halberg Sportsman of the Year award this month.
Scott raced another extraordinary season to win his third Indy Car Championship. As one of the most popular and competitive race series in the world, this puts him right up there among New Zealand’s great sporting heroes. The fact that he won the top gong ahead of IRB’s World Rugby Player of the Year, Kieran Read, is a good reminder that we’ve got some outstanding performers outside of our all-conquering All Blacks.
The good news doesn’t stop there! A huge congratulations also goes to 19-year-old Nick Cassidy on claiming an NZGP hat-trick at Manfeild this month – only the second driver to win three grand prix in a row. It’s a magnificent achievement, especially considering Nick hasn’t been in a TRS car all year!
The TRS was another immensely successful and closely fought championship, which once again pitted the best young drivers from around the world against each other. Singapore’s Andrew Tang raced an impressive campaign and deservedly took home the overall honours, just ahead of Britain’s Jann Mardenborough.
Also competing at Manfeild were a raft of other championships and categories. Jason Bargwanna was too strong in the NZV8 Touring Car TLX class, as was Jamie Conroy in Formula Ford; meanwhile, Greg Murphy proved he’s still the man to beat in the V8 SuperTourers.
The ClubSport Champs is heading to Waimate for the first time on 7-9 March. Still the fastest way to win a Gold Star Championship, the weekend’s sure to be a hit and entries are still open.
The HillClimb Championship has seen two fantastic South Island Rounds competed. The series returns north to Gisborne for the finale on 15-16 March – be sure to check it out if you’re around.
