Hi there,

As daylight savings has come to a close, the shorter days mean the race season is drawing to an end, while the rally season is just roaring into life.

The NZRC opened its 2014 account with the ever-popular International Rally of Whangarei at the weekend. Congratulations to Richard and Sara Mason, who sealed a hard-fought two-day event. After winning four NZRC titles, it’s hard to believe that this was the first time the pair had won at Whangarei. The next round at Otago should be even more exciting, with reigning champion Hayden Paddon confirmed to compete.

The NZ race season still has one final showcase, with the arrival of the V8 Supercars at Pukekohe on 24-27 April. Kiwis Fabian Coulthard, Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen will be racing hard for their home crowd, so be sure to get trackside for the action!

Also competing at this round are the NZV8 Touring Cars, where both the TLX and TL championships are on the line. Defending champion Jason Bargwanna holds the TLX lead, while James McLaughlin is the man to beat in the TL class. Other support classes for Pukekohe include Central Muscle Cars, V8 SuperTourers, GTRNZ and NZV8 Utes – there’s plenty of action for everyone.

Some of the best and brightest from these classes – among others – will be recognised at the MSNZ awards dinner, which is held during our AGCM weekend in Dunedin on 23-24 May.

In addition to the winning drivers, it’s with great appreciation that we also present awards to volunteers, officials and motorsport backers.

It isn’t an easy sport to run; whether it’s a grass roots event or a major meeting, such as a V8 Supercars, there’s always a crucial contribution from local clubs and volunteers. Therefore, it’s important to continue to acknowledge the hard work of those who make competing possible, including the staff at the MotorSport NZ office.

Enjoy your autumn and winter motorsport – hope to see some of you in Dunedin next month.

Cheers,

Shayne Harris
President
